GLOBAL DEVELOPMENT MUST BE HUMAN, INTEGRAL, SUSTAINABLE

VATICAN CITY, OCT 1, 2004 (VIS) - Cardinal Renato Martino, president of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, is in London where today he addressed the 16th Banking Conference, an annual meeting which is promoted by the Italian Chamber of Commerce for the United Kingdom and includes leaders from the British banking world. The theme of this year's meeting is: "Is there a European model for global economic and social growth?"

In his talk, the cardinal reflected on ways to make development in the world more human, integral, sustainable and characterized by solidarity. He stated the need for more cooperation in development, noting that currently "the action of cooperation suffers from bureaucratic language, which imposes heavy burdens on the receiving countries in order to meet the requests for supervision and evaluation on the part of donors."

Greater funding is needed for development, he added, stating that "several governments are moving significantly in this direction, with the moral support of the Holy Father and the Holy See." Cardinal Martino concluded by stressing that "models of development must not degrade extraordinary richness and diversity present in Europe."
